Easy Blueberry Honey Oatmeal

Why is oatmeal good for you? Oats are a whole grain, meaning that they are a complex carbohydrate, rather than a simple carbohydrate like refined white flour. The body has to work at breaking apart complex carbs. As a result, it raises your blood sugar in a slower, controlled manner unlike sugars and simple carbs, which cause your blood sugar to spike. Oatmeal has been shown to help remove cholesterol, and it tastes good without adding salt, helping to maintain your blood pressure. Oats are also a good source of fiber. To take advantage of these health benefits, opt for the whole oats rather than the flavored instant packets of oatmeal.

Easy Blueberry Honey Oatmeal

1 cup Quaker Quick Oats, the kind that comes in a big tube (ingredients: 100% natural whole grain quaker quality rolled oats)
1 3/4 cup water

a little less than 1/4 cup raw sugar
1 1/2 large handfuls of fresh blueberries
organic or natural, unprocessed honey

Mix together oats, water, sugar, and blueberries in a microwave safe bowl. I use a plastic mixing bowl. Cook in microwave on high for 2 minutes. Stir. Cook for another 2 minutes. Stir. It is a good sign when some of the blueberries burst open. Allow the oatmeal to sit 2 minutes. Spoon into bowls. Garnish it by drizzling honey on top, letting it collect in delicious little pools. Garnish with a few extra blueberries on top.
