Sprinkle Stars

Sprinkle Stars are delicate, pretty sugar cookies. Use your favorite star-shaped cookie cutter and red and green colored sugar. If your cookie cutter makes delicate shapes like mine does, then make sure you leave your dough a little thicker when you roll it out to prevent breakage.

Sprinkle Stars

1 1/2 sticks butter, softened

1 cup sugar
3 egg yolks
2 tsp vanilla
2 cups all purpose flour
1/8 tsp salt
red and green colored sugar

Cream together butter and sugar with mixer. Mix vanilla and and egg yolks into batter. Remove mixer. Add flour and salt all at once. Using rubber spatula, scrape sides of bowl and fold mixture until it forms a ball of dough. Divide the dough in half. Wrap each half in plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Roll out dough between two large sheets of wax paper to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness. Remove top sheet of wax paper. Cut out shapes with cookie cutter. Use the wax paper to help you peel up the cookies if needed. Re-roll scraps to make more cookies. Sprinkle red sugar on a saucer and green sugar on another saucer. Place the cookie face down on the red sugar. Repeat if necessary. Then place the cookie face down on the green sugar. Repeat if necessary. Put cookies on lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes or until slightly browned on the edges.

Remove from oven and let stand on cookie sheet for 5 minutes. Gently use a spatula to ease the cookies off cookie sheet and onto wire rack to cool. Makes about 1 dozen cookies per dough disc.
